This was a franchise that refused to fail. That the team exists at all is a lasting tribute to Lamar Hunt and his dream to own a pro football team. The improbable gamble of starting a new league not only succeeded, but forever changed the game of pro football, on and off the field. And Kansas City has been the greatest beneficiary of Hunt's vision. The NFL Says No Lamar Hunt began his pursuit of bringing professional football to Dallas in 1958. An NFL franchise had failed in the Texas city as recently as 1952, but the then 26-year-old SMU graduate was convinced that given the right opportunity, not only would a professional team succeed in Dallas, it would flourish.

But whether they were the Texans or Chiefs, the franchise was still a championship team, and much was expected of them. Then tragedy stepped in. Fred Arbanas In the final exhibition game before the 1963 season started, Chiefs rookie flanker and former Olympian Stone Johnson broke his neck and died less than two weeks later. It was a tremendous blow to the team. Johnson had already won over his teammates and promised to be a star. His death was the first of several unfortunate and tragic moments that came to visit the Chiefs during their first three seasons in Kansas City.
