I have outwalked the furthest city light. ROBERT FROST I LOVE NIGHT, SOME of my earliest memories are of magical summer evenings, the excitement I felt at night's arrival, its dark splendor. Later, when I was eleven, there were hot summer nights, especially if the moon was bright, when I felt irresistibly drawn outside.

It will be a very cold night on a very inhospitable earth. But it is unlikely humans will be around, at least in their present form, to take in the spectacle. For interstellar night beckons us, and we have already flown through the deep night of space to the moon. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. PSALM 19:2 As I write this, it is a hot August night, a Saturday. My study window is open to let in some cool air, but stray sounds are also coming in. I've stopped writing because a noisy row has broken out in a neighbor's yard.

The light patter of conversation usually stops just after sunset as we begin to privately admire the subtle colors of night-rise. Though elusive they really are quite lovely—ranging from pastel lavenders and pinks higher in the sky to a deep purple just above the horizon. As the eastern sky turns a deep blue, then deeper blue still, we begin to see what looks like an indefinite, looming dark cloud rising up above the southeastern horizon. The only reason we know it's not a cloud is the fact that the sky is clear, and besides, none of us can make out a definite edge to this dark, violet shape.
