This holds for all stationary, aperiodic vibrational processes. Often such processes are random (see for instance Fig. 3c), that is, they cannot be described by a mathematical function. They are called random noise or simply noise. Examples of such ‘signals’ are all sorts of flow noise as, for instance, produced by a brook or by a water pipe, or the electrical noise generated in electronic circuits, in amplifiers, etc.

Linearity is an ideal condition to which real systems often come close but which is never completely fulfilled. The properties of a linear system are completely characterised by its frequency transfer function which is defined as follows: suppose the input signal is a harmonic vibration s(t) = sˆ exp(jωt), then the output signal will also be a harmonic vibration with the same angular frequency ω. Its amplitude, however, will differ from that of the input signal by a certain factor which depends on the frequency, and also the phase of the signal will be changed by passing through the system.
