The entire medical field is subdivided into two main areas: medical specialties and surgical specialties. Certain fields in medicine do not fit into a neat category of medicine or surgery. These fields include obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, radiology, pathology, dermatology, anesthesiology, and pediatrics. Generally, medical doctors (in the old days, these doctors were called physicians) as opposed to surgeons, treat problems with medication, while surgeons treat problems with surgery. The boundaries between the two groups have blurred because of technology and the development of less invasive treatments that both surgeons and medical doctors learn to use.
